What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching creates a safe and empowering container where the coachee can assess strengths, reframe obstacles, and leverage their internal resources to create their desired outcomes. It is a process of building clarity, intention, and empowerment.

In many ways, coaching is similar to therapy. You’ll partner with a certified professional to navigate challenges and make changes in the science-based, compassionate, and personalized manner that HPP is known for.

In coaching though, you won’t focus on diagnosing or treating mental health conditions like you might in therapy. Instead, coaching focuses on developing the person – leveraging your strengths, story, values, and vision to grow more confident and capable of overcoming the challenges you face. Coaching is also primarily focused on your present and future. The coaching methodology centers awareness, action, and accountability as stepping stones towards achieving your goals. Therapy, on the other hand, may involve greater exploration of the genesis of certain behaviors and beliefs from your past using therapeutic tools. Finally, therapists possess advanced training and experience making them best suited to partner with you on your most raw and complex health challenges...coaches on the other hand, can be powerful allies for people who’ve worked through their hardest chapters and are now eager to create what’s next.

Is Coaching Right for Me?

Our coaches at Health Psychology Partners specialize in the intersection of mental and physical health with expertise in weight, eating habits, body image, ADHD, and anxiety. This means clients now have extra options to get the support they need most. We recommend coaching when you’re looking to prioritize affordability, skill building, goal achievement, and accountability. Therapy is likely the best option if you’re dealing with a new diagnosis or a challenge that is impeding on your day-to-day functioning. Coaching may also be used in complement to therapy, perhaps when transitioning out of clinical care or looking for additional tactical support alongside your work with one of our highly skilled therapists.

The distance between coaching and therapy is more like a gray spectrum than a strict black and white distinction, however. Each practitioner can be helpful in overlapping scenarios, the work just may have slightly different focuses. To help inform your thoughts about what kind of support may be best for you, consider the following comparison which shows how the same challenge might be initially approached in coaching versus therapy:
